That thermal paste advice from a Reddit user was dead wrong
Saw a post in r/buildapc saying to spread thermal paste with a credit card for better coverage on my laptop CPU. Tried it last week on my old Dell XPS 15 and temps shot up to 95C under load. The guy who swore by it never mentioned air bubbles getting trapped. Had to redo it with the pea method and now I'm sitting at 72C max. Anyone else get burned by bad paste advice here?

Oh man @lily_stone76, that's a good point about direct die vs IHS, but even a thin layer on a laptop can trap air if you're not careful with the spread, and most people aren't pros with a credit card. It's just safer to stick with the pea method and avoid the gamble, especially on laptops where temps are already a tight squeeze.

Credit card method actually worked fine on my Ryzen desktop, maybe laptop CPUs are trickier since they're direct die. User error could be the real issue here if you didn't do a thin enough layer or press too hard. Have you considered the thermal paste quality might be the variable instead?
