I finally stopped using thermal paste like it was peanut butter, 3 laptops run cooler now

For like 2 years I was slathering that stuff on thick, thought more was better. Then my buddy who fixes boards for a living watched me repaste my ThinkPad and just laughed. He said the whole point is to fill the tiny gaps, not make a sandwich. I was actually insulating the heat. Did a repaste on 3 machines with just a pea sized dot, temps dropped 12 to 15 degrees on all of them. Made me wonder how many other 'obvious' things I've been messing up. Anyone else have that moment where a simple trick made you feel dumb for years?
