Warning: That $60 'starter' toolbox at the hardware store cost me way more in the long run

I bought one of those cheap plastic toolboxes from Lowe's for $60 thinking I'd save cash. Ended up buying a second one six months later, then a third because nothing fit right. A used metal Craftsman chest from Facebook Marketplace would've been $80 and lasted forever. Anybody else wish they'd just bought the nicer thing the first time?

Bought a cheap socket set from Harbor Freight years ago and the ratchet broke on the second use. That was the moment I learned my lesson. Now I keep an eye out for estate sales and pick up old Snap-on and Proto stuff for basically nothing. Picked up a full Craftsman set from a guy moving cross country for $40 and it's been flawless for three years. What kind of stuff are you usually working on?

That $40 Craftsman set is a steal, I've got the same one from a garage sale three years back and it's still going strong. The old USA made stuff is way better than the new Chinese Craftsman they sell now. For the ratchet issue, try spraying some WD-40 inside the head and tapping it on a concrete floor a few times, that usually frees up the stuck pawl. If that doesn't work, grab a replacement rebuild kit off eBay for like $8 instead of tossing the whole thing. I use mine for working on my old Ford F150, but it's also saved my butt fixing.
