I skipped my gym membership for 8 months and put the $45 a month into a jar, and I was wrong about what it would do
Last April I sat down and did the math on my $45 a month gym plan and figured that was $540 a year I could just keep. So I quit, put the cash in an old coffee can on my dresser, and felt pretty smart about it for a while. Here is the thing nobody tells you: by October the can only had about $270 in it because I kept grabbing a ten or a twenty for dumb stuff like pizza and gas. The money was there but it was invisible, and invisible money is real easy to spend. I finally sat down two weeks ago and opened a separate savings account at a credit union in Garland with no minimum, and now the $45 gets moved over on the 3rd of each month before I can touch it. Turns out the trick was never the plan, it was making the money annoying to reach. The can is back to holding loose change where it belongs. Has anyone else found that cash in a jar just does not work the way people swear it does?
