I finally stopped timing my showers after 5 months of trying to shave $30 off the water bill
Back in March I got obsessed with cutting our water bill and started timing every shower with a cheap kitchen timer, which turned a 10 minute habit into a 3 month grind that only saved $11 a month. What finally ended it was a $2 faucet washer swap in the guest bath that fixed a slow drip I had ignored, no timers needed. Has anyone else chased a tiny bill fix and found the real leak somewhere dumb?

Funny thing about those slow drips is they also mess with your head, not just your bill. That sound gets into your brain at night and you stop noticing it, so you just eat the cost without thinking. Meanwhile the real money sink in most homes is the toilet flapper, which can leak a hundred gallons a day and you never hear a thing because it drains right into the bowl. A timer on your shower is loud and annoying, so of course that is what you fix first. The quiet stuff is where the cash actually goes. Your washer swap was basically you finally listening to the room instead of the clock.
