Hit a $500 debt payoff milestone last Thursday and it felt way better than I expected
I have been chipping away at a credit card balance from a rough patch two years ago. Last week I finally got the total under $2,000 for the first time. I paid an extra $150 from a side gig doing dog walking for a neighbor. It's not a huge number but seeing that balance drop below that line gave me a real boost. My plan is to keep up the extra payments and be done by September. Has anyone else found a weird payoff number that felt like a bigger win than you thought?

Yeah I gotta gently push back on one thing there. @the_wade mentioned setting up automatic minimum payments and then manually adding extra, but that actually can backfire for some people. I did the same thing for a while and ended up treating that manual extra payment as optional, so some months I just never got around to it. What worked way better for me was setting the automatic payment a bit higher than the minimum, like $30 or $50 over, so the extra gets paid without me having to think about it. Then any side gig money I get is truly bonus snowball material on top of that. It's a small tweak but it turned my progress from inconsistent to steady. But yeah that $500 threshold is a real milestone, seeing that balance drop under a round number like $2k makes it feel way more real than just another random payment.

Man, that feeling of hitting a specific number like that is real. I remember when i got my car loan down past the $5,000 mark, it felt like i could finally see the finish line after what felt like forever. The key is to keep that momentum going, even if it's just a little extra here and there. What worked for me was setting up automatic payments for the minimum and then manually adding whatever i could scrape together from side cash, like that dog walking gig. That way you don't miss a beat and the surprise extra payments add up faster than you think.
