Tried a herringbone pattern on a patio job in Portland and it came out wavy
Laid about 200 bricks in a herringbone pattern for a client's backyard patio last month, and by the end of the day the lines looked like a snake crawled through them. I thought I was checking levels every few rows, but the ground must have shifted a bit under the sand base. Has anyone else had issues with herringbone shifting on you like that, or is it just my prep work that was sloppy?

Huh, did you try compacting the base again after you screeded it? I used to think herringbone was pretty forgiving, that the pattern itself would lock everything in place. But after doing a job on a sloped driveway last fall, I watched the whole thing start to wander on me. Now I swear by using a plate compactor on every layer before I even set the first brick, makes a world of difference in keeping those lines straight.
