Found the trick to setting a level line on old brick, and it was pencil lead not string
I was chasing a level course up a 90 year old wall in a house on Kirby Street and the string kept getting caught on every mortar clump. A guy I was helping out showed me to drag a 12 inch piece of carpenter pencil lead along the face before I snap the line, it fills the low spots and the string sits flat. Anyone else doing this, or do you just grind the wall down first?
