Everyone rakes joints back too far on face brick and it shows
I keep seeing guys drag the jointer back 3/8 inch on a 3/8 joint, which leaves a smeared lip that catches light on the whole wall. Rake it flush and tool it once with steady pressure, no back drag, and the joint tightens up clean. Did a porch column job in Rochester last month and the mason beside me had that lip on every course, anyone else seeing this on newer crews?
Man, I used to drag it back a hair myself and thought that was just how you keep the mortar from pulling. Then a guy showed me the light catching on those smeared lips across a whole wall and I couldn't unsee it. Flush and one steady pass really does tighten the joint up. I was wrong on this one.
