Can we talk about how many people still don't butter their bricks properly? I was helping a friend on a patio job in Springfield and saw the previous crew's work. The mortar joints were full of gaps because they just slapped it on.

It's the same lack of care you see with bad drywall or sloppy paint jobs everywhere.

Actually buttering the whole face of the brick isn't always best. Too much mortar can squeeze out and make a mess, plus it wastes material. You really just need good coverage on the edges and a solid center dab to keep it tight.
