Bought a fancy premix mortar for a small wall and it dried up in 20 minutes

Last Saturday I decided to build a little garden wall out back, only about 4 feet long. I grabbed a bag of that expensive premix mortar from the hardware store, the kind that costs like $18 a bag. Figured it would save me time mixing my own and give a cleaner look. But man, that stuff set up faster than I could spread it. I was sweating trying to lay bricks and by the time I got halfway, the mortar in the bucket was already crumbling. Ended up wasting $40 on two bags and had to chisel off half the bricks the next day. Anyone else fall for that expensive premix trap or is it just me who can't work fast enough?

Well I had the opposite experience with those premix mortars and I actually prefer them. If you work in smaller batches and keep your bucket covered between loads, they hold up just fine for a half day. The trick is not to mix more than you can use in about 5 minutes and keep your tools wet.

Cold water slows the set time way down, try that next time.
