Stopped at a rest area off I-70 in Kansas and the wild sunflowers were taller than the semi trucks
Pulled over at a rest stop near Hays last month to stretch my legs and there was this whole field of wild sunflowers behind the picnic tables. Heads were bigger than dinner plates, stalks thick as my wrist, and they were all leaning toward the highway like they were watching traffic. I grew up thinking sunflowers were garden plants, so seeing them just take over a roadside ditch blew my mind. The ground was dry and cracked but they were thick as a hedge anyway. Anybody know why they grow so well in bad soil like that?
