My neighbor insisted I soak my moonflower seeds in warm water before planting

She told me they would sprout in half the time, so I tried it with a batch last spring. After a week, the soaked ones were already pushing up while the dry ones hadn't moved. I got blooms a full month earlier on my patio. Has anyone else tried this trick with other stubborn seeds?

Hold on, I've actually had the total opposite happen. I soaked some morning glory seeds once and they basically turned to mush, like a bad science experiment. It can really backfire if you leave them too long or the water's too hot. @emmag40, it's not always a simple bath, sometimes it's a death sentence for the seed. I stick to just planting them dry now, maybe scratch the shell a bit if they're tough. Way less risky in my book.

Has anyone tried just nicking the seed coat with a nail clipper instead of soaking? @zarapalmer's right that morning glories are risky to soak, but a tiny scratch gives the moisture a controlled way in without drowning the seed. I've had way better germination that way, and no mush in sight.

So the seeds just needed a little bath first?
