Warning: comparing two ways to handle a boss who dodges email, and one clearly won
My old manager at a warehouse job in Fresno would vanish for days whenever things got tense, so I tried two things with him. First I sent long emails laying out every issue, and he ignored all of them for about 3 weeks. Then I started writing one short line in the subject like "need 5 min on Thursday" and standing at his desk till he picked a time. That short ask got answers in a day and the emails never did. So is it better to keep a paper trail and hope, or just corner them face to face? Curious what has worked for others here.
One thing to clear up: the face to face thing and the paper trail aren't really a choice between two options. You can do both at the same time. I still put the ask in writing after we talk, just a quick recap in one line so there's a record. But the part where you stood at his desk matters more than the short subject line in my book. Short emails get ignored too when someone is avoiding you. The desk visit is what made him answer, not the wording.
