Spent 3 hours fighting with our payroll system to fix a $47 error from January

After my manager told me 'just submit a ticket and it'll be quick,' I found out the real fix involved tracking down 6 different approvals and a call with a support person in a different time zone, and it took 5 business days total - has anyone else had a simple payroll fix turn into a nightmare like this?

And the worst part is, that $47 error probably cost the company way more than that in the time it took you to fix it. I had a similar thing with a $25 overpayment from six months ago. They told me it would be a quick adjustment, but I ended up having to email three different people, get a printed form signed by my manager, and then scan it and upload it to a portal that kept timing out. By the time it was done, I had probably spent like 4 hours on something that should have been a five minute fix. It's like companies spend all this money on these complicated systems but forget they still need actual humans to make them work.

Oh man, 'portal that kept timing out' - that is painfully relatable. It's like they design these systems to be as unfriendly as possible, right? I once spent an afternoon arguing with a chat bot that just kept saying 'I didn't quite get that' until I wanted to throw my laptop out the window. So I guess at least we're all in this club of wasting hours on small mistakes, which is pretty funny when you think about it. Maybe I should start billing the company for my 'human error troubleshooting' time, see how that goes over.
