Overheard my boss on a call, now I get why the layoffs hit our team first

I was grabbing coffee near the break room last Friday and heard my manager tell someone on the phone that our department was 'easy to trim because everyone follows the same routine.' That got me thinking, I always blamed the CEO for the 15% cut in March, but our manager never pushed us to cross-train or document our work. She just wanted us to clock in and out quietly. Now I see she built us into replaceable cogs on purpose. Anyone else realize their manager's 'low maintenance' style was actually a layoff target?

Did they ever ask you to write down your daily tasks or show someone else how to do your job? That is the moment you know they are setting you up to be swapped out. I have seen this happen twice now, and the teams that survived were the messy ones that had their own weird systems and nobody else could step in. Start keeping your own notes on everything you do, quietly, and make a habit of asking your manager for a written list of your duties every few months. If she cannot give you one, that tells you everything you need to know about how she sees your role.
