My old manager said I was 'too quiet in meetings' so I started doing this one weird thing
My manager at a call center in Tampa pulled me aside 2 years ago and said I needed to "speak up more or people will think you have nothing to add." I was fuming at first, but he wasn't wrong about how it looked. So I started writing down 2 questions before every team meeting, just simple stuff like "what's the deadline on that?" or "who's handling the follow up?" It took about 3 weeks before people stopped talking over me. Now I actually get asked for my input on stuff, which never happened before. Anyone else have a boss who gave harsh feedback that actually helped you in the long run?
Taking it a step further, you can also jot down a quick answer or idea for each question so when you do speak up it lands with some weight. People notice when you're not just asking stuff but actually adding to the convo. I did something similar and after a few months my manager started copying my prep habit for her own meetings with higher ups. The key is picking questions that move the meeting forward instead of just filling space.
