My old manager marked up my weekly report in red pen and wrote 'so what' next to every number
She handed it back after 20 minutes and said if a line doesn't tell the reader what to do next, it's just decoration, so now I write the action first and the stats under it, and honestly my director actually reads the thing now, but I still wonder if I was just bad at my job for 2 years or if her method was needlessly harsh.
Did she ever actually explain what "so what" meant though, or did you just have to figure it out from the red ink? Because there's a difference between a boss teaching you to write better and one just making you feel dumb. Two years of reports can't have all been useless, right?
