My old manager at a Kroger in Dayton said I should quit if I would not work off the clock, so I did
Back in 2019, my store manager, Deb, pulled me into the back office and said if I would not stay 20 minutes after my shift to finish stocking, I should just quit. I refused 3 times and she cut my hours from 32 to 12, so I reported it to the labor board and got $740 in back pay. Now I tell everyone I know at that store, and 2 of them filed their own claims. Has anyone else had a boss pull the "quit then" line and actually win that fight?
Deb sounds like she was out of line, but here's the thing, 20 minutes after your shift is a gray area if you clocked out and left. The back pay you got was $740, which is real money, but the labor board doesn't always side with the worker like that. Kroger probably settled just to make it go away, not because you were right. And telling coworkers to file claims sounds good until they get blacklisted in a small town like Dayton where everybody knows everybody.
