My manager started tracking our bathroom breaks in a spreadsheet
About two months ago, our team of eight got a new supervisor at the office in Tulsa. She implemented a rule where we had to log every time we left our desks for a restroom visit, noting the exact time we left and returned. The mood shifted from relaxed to tense almost overnight, with people rushing and feeling watched. It feels like a huge overstep and has made the whole place feel like a prison. Has anyone else had a boss try to monitor something this personal?

Sounds like she's preparing for the world's most depressing data report.

But what's the actual reason she gave for starting this? Like, did she say there was a productivity problem or something, because otherwise it just seems like she's trying to find things to control.

I have to push back a little on this, @samward. While I get that the spreadsheet sounds annoying, I actually think her reasoning might not be as bad as everyone assumes. Most managers who do this are covering themselves legally or preparing to deal with one person who abused the system, not trying to punish the whole group. The OP didn't say she actually confronted anyone or used the data to shame people, just that she's collecting it. That feels more like CYA than a prison, at least for now.
