My brother's 2 week factory job taught me more about bad bosses than 5 years of my own

Had dinner with my brother last night and he told me about his summer job at a packaging plant in Gary. He said the supervisor would scream at people for missing quota by like 3 boxes out of 200. One guy got written up for using the bathroom during a 10 hour shift. My brother quit after 12 days. It hit different hearing him describe that because I've been complaining about my micromanaging boss for years. But at least my boss never screamed at me for blinking. Has anyone here worked a job that made you realize your current boss was not that bad?

Yeah honestly I used to roll my eyes at people who said their job was toxic because I figured everyone has a crappy boss sometimes. But hearing about your brother's experience with the bathroom write up and the screaming over 3 boxes out of 200, that's a whole different animal. I had a boss who would send passive aggressive emails on Sunday nights and I thought that was the worst. Now I realize there's a big gap between annoying and actually degrading someone. Not saying micromanaging is fine, but it's not the same as treating people like they don't deserve basic dignity.

The thing about Gary is that a lot of those plants are non-union and run by temp agencies, so the supervisors know they can get away with that stuff because people are scared to lose the paycheck. Missing quota by 3 boxes is nothing, that's just a bad manager trying to feel powerful over people who have no choice. But I gotta point out that your brother's situation and your situation are two totally different kinds of bad. One is straight up cruelty and the other is just annoying overmanagement. They both suck but they're not the same level of awful, you know? Like getting screamed at for using the bathroom is a basic human rights kind of thing, not just a bad boss problem.

I mean technically 3 boxes could mess up someone's bonus structure too though, right?
