My boss just sent me a 'performance review' that's literally just a list of times I was 2 minutes late

I mean, I clocked in at 9:02 maybe three times in the last six months because of train delays, and now it's my entire annual review with a note saying I 'lack commitment'. How is anyone supposed to take feedback seriously when it's this petty? Has anyone else's manager ever focused on something this tiny instead of actual work?

Oh man, that's incredibly frustrating. In my experience, managers who fixate on tiny things like that are often avoiding the harder talk about actual performance. I'd ask for a meeting to clarify expectations and bring your own list of accomplishments to balance their petty list. That usually forces the conversation back to your real work.

Sometimes those small details show a bigger care for quality though.

Oh gosh, my friend had a boss exactly like that. She worked at a small bakery and the manager kept pointing out that her piping bags weren't twisted off perfectly at the end, like the little tail of frosting was a millimeter too long. Meanwhile she was coming in early to help with inventory and staying late to clean the ovens. Finally she just brought a tray of her decorated cupcakes to a meeting and asked if the tiny twist really mattered more than the flavor and texture. The manager actually backed down after that because the owner tasted one and loved it.
