Chose my boss's pet project over my own work, got burned, what would you do?

Last month my manager pushed me hard to redo the entire client report format for his pet client, the Harrison account. I had a real deadline on my own filing work for the 15th, but he kept saying 'this is the priority now'. I picked his project, spent 18 hours on it, and then he blamed me when my regular tasks slipped. Has anyone else had to pick between what your boss wants and what's actually your job, and how did it end up for you?
