Vent: My family's group chat almost ended my weekend until I learned the mute trick

I was about to lose it Saturday morning. My mom, her three sisters, and my cousin just hammering that chat with 50 messages about who's bringing what to the barbecue. My phone was buzzing every 2 minutes. I tried asking them to use a poll or a shared doc, got ignored. Then I realized most messaging apps let you mute a specific thread for a set time. Muted it for 24 hours and poof, peace. I checked it once later and caught up in 2 minutes. Has anyone else had family drama solved by something that simple?

That's rough, I feel for you on that one.

Muting is great for noise but sometimes it backfires though. My mom's group chat had a similar situation where I muted it for a few hours and missed that they changed the start time of the get together. Ended up showing up two hours late and got the whole "you never pay attention" lecture. Maybe it's just me but I feel like muting can make things worse if your family expects you to be instantly responsive. Plus with my family, if you ignore them too long they just start texting you individually anyway, which kind of defeats the purpose.
