That five minute conversation with a mechanic at 6am changed how I fix things

I was stuck on a job site in Phoenix last year, trying to figure out why a compressor kept tripping the breaker. Had been swapping parts for two days with no luck. An old diesel mechanic walked over from the next bay, saw me staring at it, and just said 'stop guessing, start measuring.' He showed me how to check the amp draw at startup in about ninety seconds. Turned out the motor was drawing 40% over spec from a bad winding. That one tip saved me probably six hours of screwing around on future repairs. Has anyone else had a stranger's shortcut totally reshape how you approach your work?

Man that story is gold. My buddy Tom had a similar thing happen with his old woodworking business. He was rebuilding this massive planer motor and kept replacing bearings that'd fail after a week. About to scrap the whole machine when some retired electrician at the hardware store overheard him complaining and just said 'have you checked the shaft runout yet?' Tom hadn't even thought about the shaft being bent. Sure enough it was off by about three thou. Straightened it out and that motor ran smooth for another five years. Sometimes the simplest damn thing is staring you right in the face.

Three thou? That’s barely the width of a human hair. I can’t believe something that small could wreck bearing after bearing like that. It’s wild how one tiny little thing you never think to check can make you want to throw the whole machine away.
