PSA: stop reorganizing your budget every time you get paid and start automating one transfer the day money hits
I used to sit down every second Friday with a coffee and a spreadsheet and move money around by hand, and I kept failing at it for close to a year. Like clockwork I would log in, see the number, promise myself I would be careful, and then by the next Tuesday I was pulling from savings to cover gas and groceries. About three months back my sister (she does bookkeeping in Tacoma) looked at my mess and said the problem was not my math, it was that I was making a fresh decision with a full checking account every single time, and tired me always loses that fight. So I set one automatic transfer for $150 the morning after payday, and I stopped touching the rest. That is it. The money leaves before I can see it, and I have not pulled from savings once since, which is the longest stretch in about two years. I think the thing people get wrong is they treat budgeting like a skill you get better at, when really it is just removing the moment where you have to be strong. Has anyone else had luck with a set-it-and-forget-it setup, and if so what amount worked for you?
