Picked the cheap fix for my leaky roof and now I get to repaint the ceiling too
So last month my roof started leaking right above the stairs in my house here in Dayton, and I had two choices. Pay a roofer $1,800 to tear off and redo the whole back slope, or spend $90 on some tar and patch stuff and just hit the bad spots myself. I went with the cheap patch because money is tight and the guy at the hardware store said most of the leak was probably just one flashing corner anyway. I spent a whole Saturday up there in the heat, scraper in one hand and a bucket of roof cement in the other, and I felt pretty proud of myself, honestly. Then it rained hard this past Tuesday and the stain on my ceiling got bigger, plus now the drywall above the stairs is soft when I poke it. The roofer came back out, looked at my patch job, and just said, well, you sealed it in there. So now I am out the $90 for the patch, plus I need him to redo the slope anyway, plus I am looking at drywall and paint on top of it. Lesson is not free, I guess. Anyone know if I can just cut out the soggy part of that ceiling and patch it myself or is that another thing I should stop trying to save money on?
