I finally beat my email backlog with a 10-minute purge timer

I was drowning in over 3,000 unread emails at my job in Austin, and every Monday I wasted half the day just scrolling through them. I tried folders, filters, even flagging everything, but nothing stuck. Last week I set a kitchen timer for 10 minutes and only replied to messages from the last 48 hours, deleted or archived everything older. After three rounds of this over two days, my inbox dropped to 214 and I finally stopped panicking. The trick was not catching up on everything, just cutting the pile down to a size I could actually manage daily. Has anyone else tried a time limit like that, or do you have a better way to keep the old stuff from piling back up?
