The office coffee pot is not a science experiment, people

I'm convinced half my department in the Denver office thinks the 'brew' button is a suggestion, because they keep leaving the carafe on the burner for 6 hours straight. It makes the whole floor smell like burnt tires and the coffee tastes like battery acid. Has anyone else had to post a literal instruction sheet next to their machine?

What finally got through to our team was putting a timer right on the counter. I told everyone if the coffee sits for more than an hour, it gets dumped and the next person makes a fresh pot. Did you try something like setting a kitchen timer next to the machine?

That idea about dumping it after an hour... I always thought that was a waste. My old view was that coffee is coffee, just reheat it. But seeing a timer on the counter actually changed my mind. It forces a real choice instead of just ignoring the old pot. Now the coffee is always fresh, and nobody has to drink the burnt stuff. It turns out dumping a little coffee saves a lot of bad moods.

Yeah, the "just reheat it" mindset is a tough one to break. I get what you're saying about the timer making it a real choice instead of something you can just ignore. Once you see that timer ticking, it's harder to pretend the coffee is still good. That visual cue does something to your brain, makes you actually pay attention to what you're drinking. I think that's the key, making the problem impossible to overlook.
