Pro tip: The old timer who taught me to count bolts before I touched anything

Back when I started at the warehouse 11 years ago, there was this one guy named Jerry who worked in receiving. He must have been pushing 70, and he talked real slow like he had all the time in the world. One day I was about to pull a pallet down from a high rack and he just put his hand on my arm. He said "count the bolts on the frame before you move a thing, son. Every single one." I thought he was crazy, but I did it anyway. Turns out there were two missing bolts on that rack, and if I had pulled that pallet the whole thing could have come down on me. He retired about a month later and I never really thanked him properly. Has anyone else had an older coworker give you advice that seemed dumb at first but ended up being lifesaver?

Missing bolts on a rack isn't about counting bolts on a frame though.

Doesn't it feel like the best advice is always about slowing down to notice the small stuff we usually blow past? That old timer's trick is basically a life lesson in checking for cracks in the foundation before you lean on it.
