Took me 6 weeks to figure out my text block was shifting because of one stupid thing with my backing boards
I was binding a run of 30 journals last spring and every single one came out with the text block drifting down about 3mm in the case. I checked my sewing, then my rounding, then tried three different glues thinking the spine was shrinking unevenly. Took the whole batch apart twice and rebound 12 of them by hand before a guy at my local guild meeting in Portland asked one question: are you squaring your backing boards after you cut them? Turns out my boards were 2mm off from the factory edge and I never checked. Once I started squaring every board on the guillotine first, zero drift on the next 40 books. Six weeks of my life gone because I trusted a factory cut. Anyone else get burned by assuming a new board is square out of the pack?
Had the same thing happen with a pack of 10 boards from a supplier in Ohio. The kicker is the factory edge can be off in thickness too, not just square. Calipers on all four corners before you trust any new stack.
