TIL that grain direction matters more than I thought after a bad hinge crack at the Iowa City book arts fair
I was at the book arts fair in Iowa City last Saturday showing off a coptic stitch journal I was proud of, and a retired binder picked it up and asked which way the grain ran on my boards. I said I didn't check, and she just smiled and pointed at a hairline crack starting along the spine edge. Turns out I had glued the boards with the grain running vertical while the spine was horizontal, so every time the cover opened it fought itself. She showed me the tear test right there at her table, and it took me maybe 20 seconds to feel the difference. I went home and re-cut the boards on all 4 of my current projects. Does anyone else do the tear test before every batch, or am I the only one who skipped that step?
