That time my uncle said I was wasting time hand-stitching every signature

He was a retired printer and told me machine binding was the only way to go for any kind of volume. I tried his method on a batch of journals for a local shop and two of them fell apart within a month. The glue just didn't hold up like my usual stitching. I went back to doing it by hand and haven't had a complaint since. Anyone else have a relative give them 'expert' advice that backfired?

Did he have any explanation for why his glued bindings failed, or did he just blame it on something you did wrong? I am curious if he ever admitted the hand stitching was better after seeing those journals fall apart. Or did he double down and say you must have used the wrong glue or something?

@the_susan he just said I used cheap glue, never answered why his own test bindings fell apart.
