Rant: That 'perfect grain direction' snob at the meetup

I was at the guild meetup last Tuesday and this older guy kept touching everyone's spines like he was grading them. He told me my grain direction was 'compromised' because I cut my sheets without checking the arrow first. Look, I've bound maybe 200 books over 3 years and never had a warp issue that mattered. But now I'm second guessing every single text block I've made. Is grain direction actually that critical for smaller formats like a 5x7 journal, or is it mostly a flex for big leather folios? Has anyone else gotten this lecture and just ignored it without problems?
