I finally stopped fighting my awl and started sharpening it like a pencil
Honestly, for two years I used the same dull awl from a kit I got in Portland, and I thought punching holes was just supposed to be a workout. Then at a bindery meetup last month, this older guy named Ray watched me struggle for like five minutes and just said, 'You're not carving a roast, sharpen the tip every 20 punches.' He pulled out a fine file and showed me on his own tool, took maybe 30 seconds. I tried it on a 40-page journal that night and the difference was huge, no more torn endpapers. Has anyone else been using a dull awl forever without realizing it?

Ever try a strop? That's what saved my awl.
