Dropped $75 on a bone folder I didn't need and a $12 teflon one does the same job
I bought a hand carved bone folder at a supply shop in Chicago two years ago thinking it would make my creases perfect. Turns out the $12 teflon one I grabbed on a whim does cleaner work on my text blocks and never leaves a shine. The fancy bone one just sits in my drawer now and the teflon one gets used on every single book. I keep telling myself I'll find a use for it but honestly I just like looking at it. Anyone else buy a tool that was supposed to change everything and then reach for the cheap one every time?
This is the same story as my kitchen knives lol. Spent way too much on a fancy chef knife and the $20 one from the restaurant supply store gets used every single day. We convince ourselves the expensive thing will fix something in us, not just do the job better. Turns out half the time we're just paying for the story we tell ourselves about being serious about our craft. The teflon folder being the real workhorse while the bone one sits there looking pretty is basically a life lesson.
