Warning for book clubs: let the person who picked the book run the meeting, not the group
Our club in Portland tried two ways of running meetings over the past 6 months and the gap was huge. First we had a rotating leader who had to read a discussion guide and keep things "fair," and half the group never finished the book. Then in March we switched to letting whoever picked the book lead, with 3 questions they actually care about, and we went from 6 people showing up to 11. The picker knows why the book matters and can steer the talk when it drifts to everyone's kids. I'm not saying guides are bad, but the energy died when nobody had a stake in the room. If your group is stuck at low turnout, try handing the meeting to the picker for two months and see what happens. Has any club out there made a different fix work?
