Unpopular opinion: picking the next book in the last 5 minutes of book club is why half our picks get abandoned by page 80
We spent 20 minutes arguing about a 600 page novel nobody finished, then grabbed whatever was on the front table at the store on the way out, so I started a rule where the person who suggests a book has to say out loud which page they got to and what happened there, and oddly enough our next pick got finished by all 9 of us, does anyone else's club have a rule like this or do you all just wing it too?
That bit about the front table at the store hit me hard because that is exactly how my group ended up reading a coffee table book about mushrooms for two months. Nobody wanted to say they hated it so we all just kept not reading it and showing up anyway. Your rule is honestly genius and a little savage, making people admit the page they stopped on is basically calling their bluff in front of everyone. We just wing it and it shows, our last three picks died before chapter four and one of them was only 200 pages. I might steal this for our next meeting even if it makes me look bad first.
