The critique that made me ditch 300 pages of backstory

My book club tore into my latest pick about a family saga, said the first 100 pages read like a genealogy chart. One lady, Karen from Austin, straight up said 'nobody cares about great-aunt Mildred's third cousin twice removed.' I cut the whole prologue and jumped straight into the conflict during our next discussion, and suddenly everyone had opinions. Has anyone else had to gut their reading list just because one harsh critic was right?
