The book club pick that got returned to the library before we finished it

Our group chose a 700 page historical novel for March and three of us put it on hold at the same library. The hold came in Tuesday, but the due date was only 14 days out. By the time our meeting rolled around, two members had to return it half read because someone else had it reserved. We spent the whole discussion talking about the first 200 pages and the librarian now knows us by name. Has anyone else had a library hold ruin a club pick like this, or do you all just buy copies?
