The book club elder who told me to stop picking books just because they won awards
She said the Pulitzer lists are full of novels that read like homework, and after 6 months of slogging through three winners back to back, I finally see she was dead right, so how do you all actually decide what to pick for your group?

The 2021 Pulitzer winner The Night Watchman alone sparked three hours of argument in my group about the nature of historical fiction versus biography. Honestly the prize lists force you to engage with craft and themes that a breezy bestseller like The Midnight Library just won't touch. Ngl my group has had way more memorable conversations about The Overstory's structure or Demon Copperhead's voice than we ever had picking random BookTok picks that vanish from memory by the next meeting.

The Midnight Library made me cry on an airplane, I don't need my book club to turn into a college seminar to have a good time lol.
