The $120 annotated classic that tanked my book club meetup

I bought that fancy hardcover of Moby Dick with all the margin notes and maps, thinking it would make our discussion way deeper. Instead everyone spent 20 minutes asking why the whale had a tracking chart and nobody actually talked about the themes. The $120 version made me look like I was showing off, and the regular $9 paperback would have worked fine. Has anyone else blown a chunk of cash on a special edition that backfired in a group setting, or do annotated versions actually help your club?
