Serious question, how do you deal with a book club that goes totally off the rails?
Our group spent 45 minutes last Tuesday arguing about whether the author's dog was a metaphor instead of actually discussing the plot, and I left feeling like we didn't get anywhere. Has anyone else had a meeting where the debate got so sidetracked you wondered if you even read the same book?

Oh man, I feel this so hard. Last month we spent a whole hour debating if the main character's garden shed had some deeper meaning and I'm pretty sure it was just a garden shed. I ended up just nodding along and texting my friend "are we even reading the same book" under the table.

Three meetings in a row for us on whether the blue curtains meant depression or just that the author liked blue. I literally Googled the author's favorite color mid-discussion to settle it, and apparently it's green, so we wasted three hours on nothing. My friend Jenny and I have a secret signal now where we tap our left foot twice when someone is reaching too far, and we used it like four times during our last meeting alone.
