Rant: our club kept stalling on picking the next read so I tried a 3 minute timer and it actually worked
We used to burn a whole meeting just tossing titles back and forth, so last Tuesday at my place in Boise I put a kitchen timer on the table and gave everyone 3 minutes to pitch one pick, no talking over each other. Our pick for July came out of that in 11 minutes flat, which is a record for us, and the funny part is it was a novel nobody had pushed hard before. Has anyone else tried a timer or some other gimmick to stop the endless back and forth?
Man, the endless book back and forth is the worst part of any club. Ours used to do the same thing, somebody suggests a book, someone else says they already read it, then we spend forty minutes on a totally different title that nobody actually wants. Feels like you are herding cats and nobody brought a net. A timer is such a simple fix that it kind of hurts that none of us thought of it sooner. I like that it forced one pitch per person, because the loudest person in the room usually wins otherwise. Going to steal this for our next meetup and see if we can beat your eleven minutes.
