Question about the ending of 'The Road' after a chat with my sister

I always thought the ending was completely hopeless, but she pointed out the boy finding the family with the shotgun and said 'he found the fire, the good guys still carrying it,' which made me see the whole last chapter differently... anyone else have their view flipped by a small detail someone else noticed?

That's a great catch by your sister. I always got stuck on the "older than ten years" line about the trout, which felt like a final nail in the coffin. But if the boy really did find the good guys, does that change what the trout memory means? Is it maybe about the world just being old and worn, not completely dead?

Yeah, I think your sister might be onto something there. It reminds me of how people act when their old car starts making noises - some folks just assume it's done for and start looking for a new one, but others know it just needs a tune-up and a little patience. That trout memory feels like that too, like the world's been around so long it's got some wear and tear, but not that it's given up entirely. I've noticed this pattern in a lot of old stories where something worn-out turns out to still have life left in it if you look past the surface. Makes you wonder if that's the real message here, doesn't it?

Honestly that line always felt like a cheap shot to me. The world's beat up for sure, but the kid finding help means it's not all gone. Focus on that part instead.
