Our book club in Denver got stuck on 'The Goldfinch' for three months

We kept fighting about whether Boris was a good friend or a bad influence, and no one would budge. I finally made everyone write down their top three scenes that proved their point and read them out loud. Hearing the specific parts people picked, like the desert car crash or the Amsterdam hotel, made us see the book in a new way. What's your best trick for moving past a book club argument?

Bringing in a history teacher is a smart move. My club's trick is to just declare the book "problematic" and then aggressively suggest a trashy beach read for next month. It works every time.

My book club in Austin had a similar standoff over "The Sympathizer." We finally brought in a third party, my friend who teaches Vietnamese history, for a 20 minute Q&A. Having an outside expert frame the historical context shut down the petty bickering fast. What book caused your biggest stalemate?
