My book club's group chat blew up over a nonfiction pick
Last month I suggested a memoir about a rock climber and three members quit before we even met, so did I mess up by not vetting it for trauma triggers or is that just part of picking harder reads?
The part about "did I mess up by not vetting it for trauma triggers" is where I kinda disagree with you. Picking a book for a group is not the same as being in charge of everyone's feelings, and a memoir about climbing is a pretty normal pick on paper. If three people quit over it, maybe the group had different ideas about what they signed up for, and that is worth talking about instead of just blaming yourself. You could always give a heads up next time like "hey this one gets heavy," but that is a kindness, not a rule you broke. Honestly a book club where every pick has to be safe for everyone sounds kinda boring, and hard books are kinda the point sometimes.
