I used to think book club picks should always be new releases

For years, I pushed for our group to only read books published in the last 12 months. Last month, we read 'The Remains of the Day' from 1989 because one member insisted. The discussion was the best we've had in six months, with everyone bringing in different views on class and regret. It completely changed my mind about needing a recent book to have a fresh talk. Now I see a classic can give you way more to debate. What's the oldest book your club has read that sparked a great argument?

Our 1998 pick of Lolita still makes me cringe, but wow did we argue, @williams.sage.
