I finally quit a book club that made us buy 6 hardcovers in 3 months, that was $140 gone
The picks kept being new releases only out in hardcover, and nobody would vote for the library copy because they wanted to pass the book around. I bailed after the March meeting in Denver and nobody has texted me since. Has a club ever pushed you to buy books instead of borrowing them, and did you stay?
The part about nobody voting for the library copy hits home. In my experience clubs like that are really just a book buying club with snacks. Mine pulled the same thing, new hardcovers only, and when I said I'd get it from the library I got the whole "but we pass the book around" speech. I stayed way too long and spent money I didn't have, which was dumb. Your mileage may vary but bailing sounds like the right call to me.
