Dropped $45 on a book club membership and the first pick was a 900 page slog
Our little group in Portland voted to switch to a paid membership at a local shop so we could get discounts and a private room. It cost each of us $45 for the year and I was honestly excited about it. Then the first pick was this 900 page historical novel that half the group couldn't finish by the meeting. Our discussion turned into a debate about whether paying for the space meant we had to respect the vote or if we could veto long books. We ended up spending 40 minutes arguing about page limits instead of the actual story. Has anyone else had a paid club situation where the money made the book choices harder to fight about?
